Comments: I heard it said once that moths normally navigate using the
moon as a guide. When they come across an artificial light source in the dark it
throws them off course and they end up continually burning themselves on
the light. Meanwhile they fail to get where they want to go. I couldn't help but
feel this was a good analogy of humans (well OK me :-) trying to navigate
through life without a true source of reference. We can't rely on our own
understanding as so often this has been made slightly askew from our upbringing
or bad experiences. Really, we are only going to hurt ourselves by trying to
navigate through life without a true reference to keep us set on the right
course. Be it from a close friend, or the Bible or whatever, we all need
readjustment from time to time from a TRUE source.
Just like a moth around a light bulb, I was absolutely wrong
And I was dying in the process while I wrote it down in song
Still I'd keep coming back for the burning - if I didn't wake real soon

Composer's Comments: What is it about the sun that makes people feel good? Could it be that even at a subconscious level we feel that whomever could make such a marvelous spectacle, with all his power and wisdom, must surely be able to offer us hope for the future. Whatever the case, I certainly feel better on a sunny day and the marvelous spectacle of such a heavenly body always takes me out of my own puny world and it reminds me that someone with immense power and wisdom will surely not leave us on our own.
I just love that in the evening in the summertime
You can wait 'till past eleven just to watch the sun go down
Then as if the hand of God Himself would paint the sky

(10) Learning
to Love
Composer's Comments: You might imagine that such a powerful thing as love would be something we know instinctively from birth. Sadly that's not the case. And in some ways, from an early age, we are 'led up the garden path' by the media that it should be easy. Even romatic love can often be portrayed in song or film as something that happens quite naturally and seems effortless. When you consider the Bible's description of love, it can be dauntingly obvious just how much there is to learn. For most people growing up in today's unloving world (myslef included), it can even be a battle to overcome the first hurdle - to love oneself, and then others. And it can also be a challenge to love when there is no love returned. I wrote this song during a difficult time struggling with unrequited love, whereupon I decided to take a good friend's advice; to love that person even more, love them without expecting anything in return. In other words consentrate on the supreme love: agape. It was sound scriptural advice. While initially I still found it hard get over the 'connection' I felt - how I was bowled over by this person's kindness and sincere heart, eventually as I applied principled love, It led to a healthy "letting go" where I was happy simply to see them happy, even if I was not part of their life. It's true; love never fails.

Composer's Comment:
After enjoying a circus performance and thinking back on the trapeze and high
wire walker - it occurred to me that in life we don't have the advantage of a
safety net - we only get one chance and we have to just give it our best shot.
But if we don't take any chances be it in relationships or whatever, we may find
ourselves hiding from life. Life is not a spectator sport (Despite what TV
programs like Big Brother might like you to think). We have to make serious
choices and often with serious consequences if we get it wrong. Speaking as
someone who has slipped more times than stayed up, I can only say the best we
can do is keep looking (up) to our creator for guidance as we go.

Composer's Note: In this song, the Term "Burned the Tee-shirt" is a poetic furtherance of the term used here locally "Got the Tee-shirt" which is a shortened form of saying you've fully experienced a visit somewhere. i.e. "I've been there, saw all the shows and even got the tee-shirt" (a tee-shirt that would usuually say "I've been to Blackpool" or whereever). By saying "I've been there - burned the teashirt" this is my way of saying 'I've been there, had the full experience and it was such a bad experience, I burned the proverbial "tee-shirt", in order to erase the memory of ever having 'been there'.

Composer's Comments: You might imagine that such a powerful thing as love would be something we know instinctively from birth. Sadly that's not the case. And in some ways, from an early age, we are 'led up the garden path' by the media that it should be easy. Even romatic love can often be portrayed in song or film as something that happens quite naturally and seems effortless. When you consider the Bible's description of love, it can be dauntingly obvious just how much there is to learn. For most people growing up in today's unloving world (myslef included), it can even be a battle to overcome the first hurdle - to love oneself, and then others. And it can also be a challenge to love when there is no love returned. I wrote this song during a difficult time struggling with unrequited love, whereupon I decided to take a good friend's advice; to love that person even more, love them without expecting anything in return. In other words consentrate on the supreme love: agape. It was sound scriptural advice. While initially I still found it hard get over the 'connection' I felt - how I was bowled over by this person's kindness and sincere heart, eventually as I applied principled love, It led to a healthy "letting go" where I was happy simply to see them happy, even if I was not part of their life. It's true; love never fails.

After enjoying a circus performance and thinking back on the trapeze and high
wire walker - it occurred to me that in life we don't have the advantage of a
safety net - we only get one chance and we have to just give it our best shot.
But if we don't take any chances be it in relationships or whatever, we may find
ourselves hiding from life. Life is not a spectator sport (Despite what TV
programs like Big Brother might like you to think). We have to make serious
choices and often with serious consequences if we get it wrong. Speaking as
someone who has slipped more times than stayed up, I can only say the best we
can do is keep looking (up) to our creator for guidance as we go.
