Downloading Free MP3s with a SLOW connection

Notes and Tips on Downloading When Using A Slow Dial-Up Connection

My Dial-Up Connection Keeps disconnecting before the download completes

What Is This MP3 Thingy Anyway?

Bob Dylan is still ringing loud with 'the times they are a changin'! Not that long ago 78s were replaced with 33s and 45s (that's LPs and Singles to most people). Of course the numbers 33 and 45 represented the speed that the vinyl record was going around on the turntable (i.e. 33RPMs) and that sounded technical to newcomers back then too. Then of course everything went digital. And since then, it's all about getting the same sound into smaller and smaller memory. And it has to be done without losing quality.

MP3 is a 'compression' method - a way of squeezing a sound file so that it is way smaller than it was but still sounds the same. Obviously the smaller it is, the quicker it can be uploaded or downloaded over the internet. There is a limit to how much you 'squeeze' the file though because there comes a point when you lose quality. Typically 128kbps is the accepted standard for MP3 compression which will still retain CD quality sound - above that is not noticeably any better quality. But below that the quality suffers particularly for certain types of music.

Why Bother?

Well, as mentioned above, when it comes to downloading over the internet, time is of the essence - so smaller file - quicker download. So too is space. You can put 100s of songs on a single CD in MP3 format - but usually only about 25 normal 'wave' files. Remember when you used to have a CD changer in the Car to play 10 CDs? - not any more ONE CD will play all those songs and more if they are in MP3 format. Most modern cars now come with MP3 CD players as standard. This means that if you can convert all of your music to MP3 files (which you can do for free on your computer), you could store your whole library on a single DVD! (or maybe two DVDs if your library is massive) You could store this DVD at a friends house or at the office. Then if for some reason you lost your music collection (house fire/ Burglary etc) you would still have all your music on ONE DVD! So it makes sense to get a handle on this format now. If you haven't explored the world of MP3 files yet, you should. Even the Watchtower and Awake magazines are now available as MP3 CDs instead of Tapes. Also the entire Bible is available in MP3 format on MP3 CD/DVD

Buying an MP3 Music Download Album from this site is really simple. If you’re new to this, don’t be afraid, it’s very straight forward.

Firstly: PAYMENT:

you purchase this album by clicking on the Buy Now button which will take you to a secure PayPal site. This is now even easier than before because you don’t need to sign up for a PayPal account. (However if you do want to set up an account with them it quite is easy to set up. - just go to www.PayPal.com and follow the sign up instructions. You will find this very handy for many other purchases online so don’t think it’s not worth your while.)

Secondly: MP3 PLAYER:

To benefit from the MP3 album you need software on your computer to play this kind of file. As it happens Windows comes free with WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER but there are also many free programmes on the net you can download for free to play these files and to burn them to your CD (such as www.MusicMatch.com and iTunes – Each of these have their own help area to get you started)

What Am I Getting?

When you complete your download you will have all of the songs from the album you chose. All these songs are in MP3 format. You can listen to them straight away on your computer, transfer them to your iPod or MP3 walkman, or you can copy them to a CD (see Burning to CD below). Of course all of the lyrics are available free to download from the site.

Here’s how it works.

I’ve downloaded my MP3 Album as a Zip – What do I Do Now?

When you download your zip file, double click on it to open it. You will then see all the songs listed.

You now need to extract these to a folder

To do this simply click on the “Extract all files” link in the top left under the Folder Tasks area

The Extraction wizard will then open   To get started Just click next

To save the files in a folder in the same area of that you downloaded to (and called by the same name as the zip file) just click next, However, if you want to store them somewhere else on your computer or/and you want to change the name of the folder you are putting them in to, click browse and select a destination for the files (REMEMBER WHERE YOU PUT THEM). You can create a new folder if you wish.

Once the wizard has finished extracting the files into the folder you chose and the place you chose you will see this dialogue box:

Just leave the ‘show extracted files’ box ticked and click the Finish button. The wizard will close and the folder holding your song files will open. To hear the songs on your computer, from here you can simply double click on the files to hear them play or you can simply drag and drop them into your Itunes or whatever programme you use for music (see below) open up your Music player and add this album (folder) to your library in there. To burn them to a CD please read the section below.

BURNING YOUR ALBUM TO A CD

As to burning your files onto a CD (you are permitted to do this ONCE for your own use NOT TO DISTRIBUTE TO OTHERS). Because there are so many different programmes for doing this I can’t possibly include instructions on how to do this for them all. You will need to check the help files of the programme you are using for burning.

I would recommend that when you make a CD that you keep the songs in the same order as they appear on the title listing on the web-site. This way you can find lyrics easier and your album will be consistent with all those earth wide. In particular the album; "Moy Monkey's Lessons For Life" needs to be kept in order because each song is introduced by Moy Monkey as he goes through his school day.

You should be aware though that there are two ways of putting these files on your CD.

  1. you can put them on ‘as is’ in other words as MP3 files. (in this case ONLY a CD/DVD player that can play MP3 files will play them. - (remember they're squashed - they have to be 'un-squashed' first to be played as audio - Most modern DVD and CD players now play MP3 files however)
  2. Or you can convert them to .wav files (wave files in other words - these are not compressed) and put them on CD. In which case any DVD/CD player will play them. Most CD burning software will automatically convert to .wav 'on the fly' prior to burning to the CD unless you choose to make a data CD keeping the files as MP3 files..

So you will need to choose the right burning method for your uses. CD writing software like Nero open with a menu allowing you to choose the medium - CD then the type of data to burn - Audio then either MP3 Or Wave files.

Making an MP3 file CD means you can fit more songs onto one CD (Typically 200 or so depending on the files)

Whereas making a WAVE file CD means you can only fit about 80 minutes of music on one CD.

Some people keep their entire collection of music as MP3s on a DVD (which will play on your DVD player without having to change disk) as a backup in case they lose their music in a fire or whatever.

Notes and Tips on Downloading When Using A Dial-Up Connection

What is a dial-up connection? Basically if you connect to the internet you use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and you either are connected all the time (such as with broadband or ISDN or others – which are faster) or your computer will dial-up your service provider so you can access the internet. If your computer dials a number like this, (you may hear it dial out or there may be a delay of a minute or so before you connect) then you most likely have a slow “Dial-up” internet connection.

Please note: I do not recommend MP3 Album purchases for users with a slow connection.

Having said this it may be helpful for you to be aware of some problems that can be overcome when downloading even the free MP3s.

Specifically the problem of being disconnected before the completion of a download.

Often internet server providers (ISPs) with dial-up access will cut the connection after so many minutes. Sometimes because they only allow you to be connected for a specific time (and there’s nothing you can do if that is the case) but also on account of inactivity.

If you have dial up connection it may take as much as 20 - 30 minutes to download and you may be cut off before the file is finished downloading (broadband would download in 2-3 minutes however). Also disconnection may occur if your own browser (internet explorer) assumes you are no longer using the internet. Now, I know what you’re thinking – “I’m not inactive on the internet – I’m downloading!” But often for whatever reason the system doesn't detect the download as 'use'. As for the browser cutting you off, there is a way to disable this but the easiest way around this which will also satisfy your ISP is simple. Once you have clicked on the download and it starts to download, navigate to another page (browse the lyrics on my site perhaps ) and click on a link every five or so minutes. This way the browser (or your ISP) 'thinks' you are busy using the net and does not disconnect you due to presumed inactivity.

Disabling the auto disconnect on your browser’s settings (Internet Explorer Only)

(Note: if your connection continues to be cut off after making the changes below then it is your ISP that is disconnection you. Other than making sure you ‘show’ yourself to be ‘using’ the internet by clicking on links now and then I can’t offer any further suggestions. You may have to upgrade your contract with your ISP or use a different ISP

Your browser may be set to disconnect if idle after so many minutes. To check this and disable it;

While Internet Explorer is open

Click on the menu item TOOLS

then select Internet Options

A control panel will open with 7 Tabs on the top – select the Connections Tab

Select the Dial-up connection and

Click on the Settings Button to the right

Another window will open

Now click on the Advanced button

(bottom right)

The Advanced Dial-up window will open

There two square boxes to do with

Disconnection

Make sure there is NO TICK in either of these boxes

Then Click the OK button to accept the changes and close the window

Then Click the OK button again in the next window

Then Click the OK button to close the Internet Options panel – you’re done.
